Bird-based branding for Edinburgh book festival

Tangent Graphic has created the branding for this year’s Edinburgh International Book Festival, based around a series of songbird illustrations.

The consultancy worked with Portland-based illustrator Josh Brill to create the look.

Tangent says, ‘The theme, in this landmark year in Scotland’s history, is the importance of dialogue. With the independence referendum hot on the heels of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland is the focus of a great deal of international attention and debate.’

Using the strapline ‘let’s talk’, Brill created a series of songbird illustrations, including a Willow Warbler, a Magpie and a Crossbill.

For the children’s programme, exotic bird such as Toucans and Flamingos are used.

The visual identity is rolling out across a series of touchpoints including marketing material, the festival programme and branding.

Tangent has worked with the festival for the past five years, creating a new visual identity each year.

This year’s festival runs from 9-25 August.
