Designers ‘chart’ festive fun

The groundswell of free wall charts dolled out by quality newspapers is inspiring designers to have some seasonal fun this year.


In a clever reworking of the favourite family collectible, Love Creative has etched its very own ‘Chavs & Scallies’ wall chart, featuring popular items such as a Kappa tracksuit, a pack of Lambert & Butler cigarettes and a KFC Family Bucket. The pin-up pictures, illustrated by Tim Sinclair, are accompanied with some clever captions. A Burberry cap for example features the text, ‘Origin: Family heirloom, helps identify whose side you are on.’


More blunt in its approach, WCRS-backed design shop Dave has opted for a more traditional wall chart featuring illustrations of Christmas items that have been hand-selected by the team. The design includes adland classics like the feelgood flick It’s A Wonderful Life by Frank Capra, an imaginary cover of the Christmas edition of the Radio Times – a favourite in Golden Square – and of course, Santa Claus, the ultimate festive brand.


‘This is fun and light heartened. It celebrates the return of the wall chart in 2006,’ observes Nick Couch, senior creative at Dave.
