BBC calls for furniture and fabric designers

The BBC is inviting design students at universities and colleges in the North of England to create furniture and fabric for its new home in Salford Quays.

The new BBC Media City UK buildings will become home to departments including CBBC, CBeebies, BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sport. The offices will be open-plan, so the BBC is briefing competition entrants to design a chair that will enable staff to make and take confidential phone calls in a quiet space.

‘We’re seeking to create a place that provokes smiles and delight,’ says Alan Bainbridge, North portfolio director, BBC Workplace.

The closing date for entries is 30 April and the winner will be announced at the end of May. The furniture and fabric will be installed in the buildings in spring 2011.
