Useful Simple Trust founders outline business model

Two founders of design collective the Useful Simple Trust say their business sidesteps ‘one of the key succession challenges’, by removing the link between equity and leadership.

The Useful Simple Trust, which launched last month, owns Expedition Engineering, design group Thomas Matthews, and Think Up, the newly formed education wing of the trust.

The founders of the companies have given away their ownership to the UST, which is an employee benefit trust.

Writing in tomorrow’s issue of Design Week, UST founders Sophie Thomas of Thomas Matthews and Ed McCann of Expedition Engineering say the group offers ‘an alternative to profit-focused, socially unaware business models and opens the door to the new and the good’.

They add that by breaking from the traditional model of having a consultancy set up by a ‘hero’ they can sidestep succession issues that occur when that founder decides to leave.
