Southbank Centre to host Festival of Britain anniversary

The Southbank Centre in London is to host celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the 1951 Festival of Britain, which is due to take place between May and September next year.

The celebrations will comprise a cross-site festival which will include themed weekends throughout the four-month programme. It is thought that the programme will include visual arts, performance poetry, debates, and musical and dance performances.

The celebrations will also include exhibitions which reflect the history of the Royal Festival Hall site, which was built in 1951 as part of the festival’s main site on the South Bank.

Spaces for the festival will also include an outdoor environment, which will feature shows, market stalls and family activities.

Further details of the programme will be revealed by Southbank Centre artistic director Jude Kelly on 19 January 2011.
