Comics, illustrations and music
Ninja Tune artist Strictly Kev, of DJ Food, is such a fan of comic book illustrator Henry Flint – whose pensmanship can be seen in 2000AD and other titles – that he commissioned Flint to create the cover of his forthcoming album, The Search Engine.
Strictly Kev says he asked Flint, who has illustrated characters including Judge Dredd and Zombo, to draw ‘a cosmonaut, hanging in space, strapped into an unfeasibly large backpack, the kind you could only wear in zero gravity’.
This image is accompanied in the album artwork by a series of black-and-white Flint images, which Strictly Kev has coloured in (with the original artist’s permission, of course).
These works are set to go on show at the DJ Food & Henry Flint exhibition, which opens at London’s Pure Evil gallery later this month.
Alongside the pieces developed for The Search Engine, will be original drawings by Flint, comic book pages from DJ Food’s personal collection, and photographs by Will Cooper-Mitchell of Strictly Kev in a replica astronaut suit – also used for The Search Engine’s artwork.
The exhibition also promises an audio-visual installation, typographic mandalas, zoetrope discs and splatter vinyl DJ controller records.
DJ Food & Henry Flint is at Pure Evil Gallery, 108 Leonard Street, London EC2, from 26 January-12 February. The Search Engine is released on 23 January on Ninja Tune.
