Electrolux launches design experience challenge

The Electrolux Design Lab 2012 challenge is inviting industrial design students and recent industrial design graduates to submit ideas that ‘develop the sensory experience of home appliances’.

This is the tenth edition of the annual Electrolux Design Challenge. The first prize is a six-month paid internship at Electrolux, and cash prizes are also on offer.

The brief calls for entrants to design home appliances that will provide a fuller sensory experience. This could involve, Electrolux says, state-of-the-art technology or a clever blend of textures and surfaces.

Henrik Otto, senior vice-president of global design at Electrolux, says, ‘I believe the importance of our sensory perception is underestimated in a lot of today’s design. Too much importance is accorded to the visual. What if we could incorporate our other senses into design? Could we smell who’s calling? Or feel what’s on TV?’

The deadline for entries is 1 June, for more information and to apply, visit www.electrolux.com/designlab.

The winner of last year’s challenge, which called for designs that considered intelligent mobility, was Adrian Mankovecky, who developed the Spot Cleaner concept (pictured), designed to remove stains from materials.

Apple use Ives for their brilliant innovation and ideas…

Electrolux uses a mass of students for free. I wonder how many of the submitted ideas have been used in their products? Should students patent their ideas before sending them in?
