Pointe Blank
June last year saw Birmingham Royal Ballet hosting a collection of beautiful designs based on the ballet Coppélia, and now the company is hosting another crop of dance-inspired artworks.
The exhibition, Pointe Blank, is a collection of images inspired by the plots of major narrative works in the repertory of Birmingham Royal Ballet by UK designers.
This year, the works are based on the Company’s production of Hobson’s Choice. A total of 27 designers, illustrators and photographers will be showing their work, including a number of Birmingham-based design consultancies including Fluid, Clusta, Substrakt, Orb, Supercool and Smile.
All the designers were briefed to create an image inspired by, but not necessarily depicting the story of the ballet, and the image must include the company name or logo. following an online call for entries, 50 – 60 invitations were sent out – with all the 27 available spaces filled within a few hours.
Claire Hartley, a graphic designer at Substrakt, worked on the project in collaboration with the Birmingham Royal Ballet. She says, ‘We wanted to branch out the ballet to a newer audience. We didn’t want the brief to be too prescriptive – as long as it had some reference to the ballet we were happy with that.’
The works will be shown at 6/8 Kafe 6/8 Temple Row, Birmingham, B2 from 5 March for six weeks, with nine images shown for a fortnight at a time.
Amazing how simple it can be to communicate with people and have them understand a certain topic, you made my day.
