Portsmouth Gallery turns rebrand process into exhibition

Portsmouth art gallery Aspex is to hold a public exhibition of three design proposals as part of its rebrand process.

The gallery will next year exhibit three identity design proposals from consultancies CHK Design, Red Design and Studio Baum, all of whom have been paid for their creative work, according to the gallery.

The gallery says, ‘[We have] decided to expose a process that would normally be private, between client and designer, to its audience, enabling a conversation to take place about what it is to develop an organisation’s identity.’

Following the exhibition, and the collection of audience feedback, a branding proposal will be chosen to become the new identity for the Aspex gallery.

The three consultancies were selected in a shortlisting process and CHK Design currently works with the gallery on design projects.

All three groups have been given the same brief to respond to, and they will all display their proposals on four A2 boards as well as a piece of A4 print design.

Aspex exhibitions and gallery manager Clive Caswell says, ‘We are working with four groups who all have different takes – there are three very different approaches.’

The gallery says its decision to rebrand comes as it seeks to shift its programming to focus on more participatory events.

The branding design exhibition will be held from 6-29 January 2012 at Aspex, the Vulcan Building, Gunwharf Keys, Portsmouth PO1 3BF. www.aspex.org.uk

Just a shame that they didn’t invite any local talent to pitch, especially as they receive funding from the local council.
No wonder there was virtually no one there to see the pitches last night!

All very well, but I notice there is no statement as to why a local gallery, part funded by local council grants, DID NOT make any attempt to invite LOCAL consultancies to take part in this process.
Personally I feel this is unforgivable considering that part of their remit is promoting LOCAL talent.
