Yorkshire-based consultancy Redman Design is developing Brighton Museum’s new World Stories gallery, which will form part of the Stories of the World project under the Cultural Olympiad umbrella.

The gallery will display Brighton Museum’s current collections from Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Pacific alongside contemporary art and artefacts. Redman Design is responsible for graphics, design strategy and concept for the gallery.

The consultancy was appointed to the project early last year following a credentials pitch. It is working with project manager Focus, and will be incorporating mobile technology such as QR codes into the gallery space to provide ‘layers of interpretation’, according to Redman Design partner John Redman.

Redman says, ‘By and large it’s the same collection, but whereas at the moment there’s just a number of cases it’s not that apparent as to how they’re grouped.

It’ll be grouped by geographical location, so each section will have a defined visual identity so you really get a sense of travelling around the world as you look at the different objects.’

He adds, ‘We’re trying to make it more bright and appealing and part of that has been looking closely at the collections on display and how to relate those to the audience they’d like to attract. The key direction was to make it more welcoming, friendly and relevant.’

The worlds Stories gallery is due to open in June.
