Most people raise money for their office charity with fun runs and bake sales – Universal Records is raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust with an exhibition of 600 one-off record sleeves, some by world famous artists.
The individually designed sleeves will be exhibited in the Idea Generation Gallery, London from next week. Visitors will be given the chance to buy their favourites on Record Store Day, April 21.
The vinyl covers have been designed by up and coming artists as well as designers like Stylorouge (Blur, the Cure, Morrisey) and Grammy winner Peter Corriston (The Rolling Stones, Billy Idol).
Each is inspired by one of seven singles, including The Cure’s Friday I’m in Love (rereleased for its 20th anniversary) and a dub remix of Bombay Bicycle Club’s Lights Out.
Visitors will not be told who designed which sleeve or which record is inside until they have donated £40 to buy one.
Universal’s Kevin King started the project, called Secret 7”, after being inspired by the RCA’s secret postcard sale. He says, ‘The secret element brings focus on the interpretation of the artwork – different artists can take the same track and do something completely different.’
Along with Universal, Music has worked on the project since it started in March 2011. They have produced print materials, the website and exhibition signage and now they are producing their own album covers to be exhibited.
Jordan Stokes, a designer at Music says, ‘I’m doing a couple of covers and I’m trying to make them a little bit different with different techniques. We’re just all trying to have a bit of fun with them – but of course, what they look like is a secret.’
