Golden Spider Silk

The result of 80 people’s work; five years of spider collecting and the silk of three million female Golden Orb spiders has gone on display at London’s Victoria & Albert museum this week  – the stunning Golden Spider Silk.

The four metre long woven textile is the only naturally golden textile woven from the silk of spiders, and will be shown together with a new golden cape, which was woven and embroidered in Madagascar, where all the spiders were collected from.

Golden Spider Silk will be on display from 25 January – 5 June at The Victoria and Albert Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7

Covenant

In what can only be described as a labour of love, or perhaps, the ludicrous undertaking of a madman, artist Daniel Rapley has spent the last 18 months writing out the King James Bible by hand, on standard feint ruled notepaper, using a ballpoint pen.  Yes, all 3,116,480 characters; 783,137 words; 31,102 verses; 1,189 chapters and
66 books of it.

The results of this bonkers project are now on show until 3 March at the PayneShurvell gallery, 16 Hewett Street London EC2A

LCF MA Graduate Season

With London Fashion Week only a few weeks away, students from London College of Fashion’s MA courses are whetting sartorial palettes next week with their exhibition and catwalk show.

Featured in the exhibition will be work from a number of courses including Fashion Artefact (such as accessories, handbags and millinery), Footwear and Photography.

The V&A will be hosting the MA Fashion Design Technology catwalk show, including some rather out-there pieces from Menswear, Womenswear and Digital Fashion. There will also be elements of others courses seen on the catwalk, with accessories and footwear paired with the catwalk designers. The exhibition will be at Victoria House Basement, Bloomsbury, London WC1B from 1 – 3 February, with the catwalk show taking place on 2 February.

Immortal Nature and the Mayan apocalypse prediction

Here at DW, we’ve been pretty caught up with the idea that the world will end this year, on 21 December, to be precise, thanks to the predictions made by the Mayans. A group show that opened this week at the Edel Assanti gallery explores this prophesised apocalypse in the suitably lofty titled show – Immortal Nature.

Utilising the gallery’s three floors to represent the Underworld, Earth and the Afterlife, each ‘realm’ investigates the ‘tensions, conflicts and hopes surrounding civilisation’s ever-changing relationship with the natural world.’
