Visions for the future of Greece

With Greece at a turning point in its history, facing potential economic default and ejection from the Eurozone, biennial Athens design festival Design Walk has invited Greek design studios to present their visions for the country’s future.

Design Walk, which launched in 2007, was set up to promote Athens’ graphic design scene.

It combines exhibitions, lectures and other events with an open studios programme in the city’s Psirri neighbourhood and, the organisers say, ‘a famous stroll around the historic centre of Athens.’

For most people in the UK, recent images of the Athens streets have generally involved protesters in hoodies lobbing petrol bombs at riot police. Design Walk provides the opportunity for Greek designers to present their city in a calmer, more positive light.

As part of this year’s event, 11 graphic design consultancies in Athens have been tasked with presenting their own visions of what Greece will look like in 2022.

‘What kind of country do we want Greece to be ten years from now? Will the characteristics of the Greek identity be affected by the monetary crisis? How can we influence the way others see us?’

All these questions and more will be answered by consultancies including Designpark, Domo Agregato, and the brilliantly named This Heart is a Pipe Bomb.
