VML London has been appointed to develop a new ‘global experience language’ for the British Library’s digital presence, while Organic Inc has been appointed to a web technical architecture review project.

The two consultancies were appointed following a tender process which launched last year, in which the British Library said it was aiming ‘to create a [digital] experience that matches the Library’s impressive physical presence in London.’

The British Library says the project will roll out over three-to-five years and will cover user experience, a full technical evaluation and reviews of search as well as the public, learner and researcher offers.

VML London and Organic Inc were appointed earlier this month to two separate lots.

VML will work to develop a global experience language, which the British Library says, ‘will comprise a comprehensive information architecture along with associated interface, interaction, graphic design and brand standards’.

The library says, ‘The ultimate aim is to bring an unprecedented unity of look and feel to the library’s web ecosystem and establish the site as an inspiring destination for content and the creation of new knowledge.’

Organic Inc will work on a web technical architecture review, which will look at elements of the site such as content management.
