Damsels in Distress

Perhaps ironically, illustrator Stanley Chow’s show about ‘iconic women’ has been titled Damsels in Distress.

The Manchester-based illustrator is returning to his home city’s Kosmonaut gallery for this latest exhibition, which held his first ever solo show back in 1996, Stan’s People.

The idea for this new collection of work, he says, came from wanting to create illustrations for his daughter.

‘Like most young children, [my daughter] is going through a Disney phase’, says Chow.

‘I created my take on the famous character of Snow White, which then led on to my depiction of Rapunzel. Those illustrations were a great starting point for my collection of illustrations loosely based around the theme of Damsels In Distress’.

When he’s not depicting fantastical women, Chow regularly illustrates for the New Yorker Magazine, as well as working for clients including BBC, McDonalds, Vodafone and BT.

Damsels in Distress by Stanley Chow runs from 5 December – 8 January 2014 at 10 Tariff Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester, M1
