Alsop gallery The Public to open in weeks

The long-awaited arts centre for the Midlands, The Public, is to open in July, two years late. Designed by architect Will Alsop with interiors by Hacienda designer Ben Kelly, the 9000m2 building will house a theatre, recording studio, offices, event and conference rooms and an interactive art space called the Public Gallery. Casciani Evans Wood is taking care of the gallery’s wayfinding, signage, website and branding.

The gallery’s three storeys are linked by a 250m spiralling ramp, to Alsop’s original design, while Kelly chose a colour scheme inspired by ‘a walk in the park’, says Public Gallery director Marlene Smith.

Smith assures Design Week all the designers, including digital group All of Us, have been paid following uncertainty in 2005 when The Public’s owners went into administration.
