Andrew Tanner wins British Council design entrepreneur award

Ceramicist Andrew Tanner has been named as the British Council’s UK Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year 2009.

The competition was open to designers aged between 25 and 35 working in product, furniture, exhibition or events design, as well as in architecture.

Tanner saw off a shortlist of finalists which also included design writer Max Fraser, Dan Ziglam of furniture design company Deadgood, and Nick Rawcliffe, founder of Raw Studio.

He has been awarded £5000 to develop a project of his choice. Tanner will work in collaboration with Turkish designers to promote craft-based manufacturing.

Tanner and his fellow finalists visited Turkey last November on a paid-for tour as part of the competition, where they were encouraged to network and establish contacts with local designers and entrepreneurs.
