Ben Kelly designs new Factory club

Haçienda and Factory Records designer Ben Kelly has developed a new live venue – FAC251 The Factory – within the former Factory Records building in Manchester.

A joint venture between former New Order and Joy Division bassist Peter Hook (pictured right) and club operator Tokyo Industries led to the appointment of Ben Kelly Design.

Tasked with ‘resurrecting’ and ‘recasting’ the building to operate as a live venue, the consultancy was asked to draw on the legacy of Factory Records’ Haçienda club but create a contemporary space for bands, promoters, DJs, and clubbers.

Three club environments have been created by Kelly (pictured left): The Basement, a live space on the ground floor; The Loft, a dance-floor space on the first floor, with a ‘VIP’ feel; and The Boardroom on the second floor, which has been unchanged from its original design.

A new identity for the venue will be unveiled ‘in a couple of weeks’, a spokesman for the owners says.

Peter Saville has not been involved in any FAC251 art direction, according to a spokeswoman for the one-time Factory Records graphic artist.
