Designers sought for Northern Futures Awards

Designer Ben Kelly and Design Museum head of curatorial Donna Loveday are among the judges confirmed for the inaugural Northern Futures Awards.

Designers, artists and filmmakers born, living, or working in the North of England, aged 21-40, will compete across four categories and are being encouraged to submit designs by 30 April.

Kelly and Loveday will sit on the three-dimensional design judging panel with Moritz Waldemeyer Studio founder Moritz Waldemeyer, Blueprint Magazine associate editor Tim Abrahams, Troika designer Conny Freyer, FX editor Theresa Dowling and designer Jonathan Krawczuk of Designed Made. Jason Bruges has been named, but remains unconfirmed.

Entrants will compete in 3D design, fine art, film and fashion categories, with the winners of each claiming a £1500 prize. Prize-winners and runners-up will have their work displayed at The Civic, Barnsley from 28 July to 3 September.

Northern Futures director Patrick Murphy says the awards will ‘counterpoint and complement London-based art and design awards’. He adds that Northern Futures will ‘celebrate and acknowledge creativity in the North of England’, in a bid to showcase ‘emerging talent’ from the region and bring it to a national and international audience.
