iPhone app lets MPs communicate with constituents

The app, which launches in Parliament today, has been designed for Labour MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey Derek Wyatt in response to his request to be more accountable to constituents and promote digital inclusion in his constituency.

‘This is a new way to encourage people who are not particularly engaged in technology or politics to get involved,’ says Wyatt.

Residents will be able to view Wyatt’s appointments and movements in the area, report issues of concern, find out where he is holding surgeries, cast their opinion on local and national issues, and watch or take part in discussions between Wyatt and other residents.

Public Zone Account manager Joanna Shaw says, ‘The whole point is about transparency and democracy – not to get MPs elected. It’s another channel of communication to build relationships.’

According to Shaw, 25 MPs have shown an interest in the app, which was produced ‘practically pro-bono’ for Wyatt.

‘We’re looking for a partner to help with funding so we can make it available to other MPs,’ Shaw adds. Constituents can download the app free of charge from the Apple store.
