Timorous Beasties works on Glasgow venue The Arches

Timorous Beasties has redesigned the bar area at Glasgow arts venue The Arches, which is due to reopen on 1 March.

The studio competed against three other design groups to win the tender in December, says designer Alistair McAuley.

Timorous Beasties had previously worked with The Arches on a large-scale refurbishment in 2000 and to create a middle bar in 2004.

The new front bar uses almost entirely recycled timber and has been backlit to give a textured feel. Timorous Beasties reused light fittings originally installed by One Foot Taller to create a half dome over the bar. McAuley says, ‘We wanted the bar to have a theatrical presence like the domes of opera ceilings.’

After the reopening, the venue will host the National Review of Live Art and Magners Glasgow International Comedy Festival.
