A new space for spring

Spring is always time for a tidy and reshuffle, and it’s no different for London-based studio Tom Dixon.

The studio’s shop, which is based at London’s Portobello Dock, has been refitted by Unibox and Lumenal to include bespoke LED-lit display units to display Dixon’s latest collection.

The designers were briefed to create display systems that looked like permanent architectural sculptures and coordinated with the space, a brick-vaulted Victorian warehouse.

The finished design includes matt black shelves that echo the building’s black steelwork and windows, and mirror surfaces which reflect the metallic finishes of Tom Dixon’s current collections.

The result is a space where products – especially Dixon’s glowing light fittings – are reflected to infinity. It’s another good example of how retail is taking cues from the art world (see Art store trip, DW, features 17 February) to create beautiful and sculptural retail environments – but from a designer, I guess we should expect nothing less.
