Doppelganger

Since humans decided to mix some dirt with water and daub it on the sides of their cave homes, the human body has been a pretty constant focus of artists’ attentions.

New book Doppelganger: Images of the human being, published by Gestalten, takes a look at some of the current trends in capturing the visual identity of human beings categorised into the themes embody, dissolve, perform, appeal and escape.

Despite the rather kitsch cover, featuring a man in Sibling’s full body Fair Isle knit suit complete with Mohawk-ed balaclava and matching body warmer, the book explores some dark, haunting and sometimes sexual representations of the body as well as some fun ones.

But as Tuesday afternoon isn’t really the time for anything too post-watershed, we thought we’d share with you some of our favourite fun creations from the book.
