Heatherwick to forge Olympic cauldron

Heatherwick Studio has been appointed to work on the design of the Olympic cauldron at the London 2012 games.

The cauldron will house the Olympic torch, which will be lit from a flame carried across the UK 70 days prior to the opening ceremony by a relay of torches.

Planning permission documents released by the Olympic Delivery Authority suggest that the cauldron may be located outside of the main Olympic stadium, but it is believed that designs will not be unveiled until the beginning of the games in July 2012.

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games launched a competition in partnership with the Design Council to find a designer for the Olympic torch last year, the winner of which is yet to be announced.

Locog has also appointed director Danny Boyle as artistic director of the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, theatre choreographer Kim Gavin as artistic director for the closing ceremonies, and costumer design Es Devlin as the closing ceremonies designer.
