Who says expensive technology is just for adults? Designer Matt Booth has created new app Crayate to allow creative children to get involved in the iPad phenomenon.

The project was inspired when very trusting dad Booth was watching his 16-month old son playing with his iPad.

Booth says, ‘It started with a really simple drawing tool for just him to play with. I then thought that there was more of a market for this, so spent the next few weeks developing the idea and design.’

Booth then asked Ben the Illustrator to create a series of unique characters and scenarios that would be the basis of the app.

Young doodlers can select a range of backgrounds and animals and then colour the picture using a selection of crayons. The pictures can then be saved as wallpapers or emailed to grandparents and the like.

Booth says, ‘This is version one but depending on how this is received future versions will include more characters, scenes along with giant letters and numbers to colour in, with more of an emphasis on learning.’

It’s an adorable and beautifully illustrated app for kids but let’s hope letting sticky hands touch a shiny new toy doesn’t end in tears.
