The Plant’s Art 13 branding comes to life – Design Week’s highlights from the fair
Today sees the opening of the inaugural Art 13 art fair, with branding by The Plant and exhibition design by Stiff and Trevillion.
The fair, housed in London’s Olympia, will feature more than 120 galleries from 29 countries around the world.
UK print and editions galleries showing at the fair include The Paragon Press, Jealous, Paul Stolper, Dark Matter Studio, and The Outsiders. In addition, not-for-profit institutions including the Royal Academy of Arts, Dundee Contemporary Arts and the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, China will also present a selection of prints and limited editions.
London galleries represented include EB&Flow, Jack Bell Gallery, Eleven Fine Art, Ronchini Gallery, and The Outsiders Gallery, which is taking the unusual step of giving away art for free.
The Outsiders owner Steve Lazarides will be giving away prints of the charming artwork below by Michael Mortgage, Starbuck Off, alongside other print works.
Lazarides says, ‘I have a fundamental issue with people having to pay to view art that is for sale. It’s like turning up at Selfridges and being asked to pay £2.50 to be able to buy a £150 pair of jeans! So to address the balance I am giving away 1500 screen prints.’
The Plant’s branding applications look impressively slick against the rather confusing layout, which – at least for this writer – feels at times cramped, at others overly spacious, and rather tricky to navigate.
However, despite our propensity to get lost, there were certainly some impressive more design-led works.
We loved the tongue-in-cheek take on the Bard by The Connor Brothers:
And illustration duo Kai & Sunny’s Sycamore Seed piece:
And we felt we’d be doing Art 13 a disservice if we didn’t highlight this cute green dinosaur:
One of the most popular elements of the fair seems to be the impressively gargantuan installation by Chinese artist Zhu Jinshi, Boat. Visitors can stand inside the piece, which is created from bamboo, cotton and 10,000 sheets of rice paper, forming a huge white tubular vessel that the fair says ‘signifies the artist’s journey and the viewer’s own passage through space and time.’
The fair is also showcasing performance art in its Art13 Performances platform. Curated by Amanprit Sandhu, performances take place on the hour in the fair’s dedicated booth, showcasing 11 performances by international artists.
Art 13 will run from 1-4 March 2013 at London Olympia, Hammersmith Rd, London W14
