Things we like this Valentine’s Day
Our selection of design-led gift ideas for tomorrow’s love-fest.
Our type of romance
Consultancy To The Point has created a series of cards that are every reluctantly-romantic type-geek’s dream. Each card is based on a typography terminology pun – expect the likes of ‘let’s get justified’, ‘RGB Mine’ and the steamingly sensual ‘be my dingbat’.
Love Potions
Treading the tenuous line between ‘seduction’ and ‘spiking’, illustrator David Shillinglaw has created limited-edition hand painted Love Potions. The set of three bottles are – as far as we can tell – empty, though the cute, if rather crude designs, should be enough to fill your soppy little hearts.
Shillinglaw’s Love Potions are available from the Moniker Projects shop
Design Museum gift ideas
Left it until the last minute to shop for your design-discerning lover? The Design Museum has all manner of lovely, yet refreshingly un-mushy gift ideas. Among our favourites are this Swallow and Heart Necklace by I Am Acrylic, who sports a little Swarovski twinkle in his eye.

LOVE and HATE at StolenSpace
StolenSpace’s series of artists’ Valentine’s Cards are not for the Thornton’s gift box and creepy teddy bear brigade. Thankfully it’s all hate, monochrome and skull iconography here, and it looks rather brilliant.

Identica spreads the lurve
Consultancy Identica, however, has taken a less embittered stance on the whole Valentine’s Day shebang, using the ever-romantic communication tool Twitter to invite people to share their favourite images and ideas from the even more romantic, softly-softly world of advertising. Read what people have to say about it all here https://twitter.com/identicadesign
#heartjelly
Illustration and animation agency Jelly’s Caroline Tomlinson is helping wee Cupid fire his arrows this Valentine’s Day, in this cute animation. Working alongside Massive Music and Alex Cragg from NeverBland, Tomlinson’s collage-led illustrations show Cupid shooting his arrows across the world, and Twitter uses can create their own personal love letter, which becomes the final frame of the animation.

Love at CultureLabel
Arts shop CultureLabel has come over all 50 Shades for this year’s Valentine’s Day it seems, with a range of what the store dubs ‘alternative’ Valentine’s Day gifts.
Feast your lust-filled eyes upon this S&M-leaning I Surrender Cuff, by Me & Zena, for instance:
Or Camille Walala’s monochrome dominatrix of a cushion, coming over all ‘I’ll tell you what to do’:
And perhaps the most daring gift, this heart-shaped human toastie machine*, by Mustard:
*turns out it’s actually nothing more than an ‘Eggspress Heart Shaped Egg Mould’. Sexy.

Do I REALLY have to spell it out?!
STILL scrabbling around for gift ideas? For something unusual that not every Tom, Dictionary or Harry will have, look to Philip Watts Design, which has created a new range of scrabble letter tiles, letting you spell out anything from ‘love’, ‘xx’ or ‘sweeetheart’ to ‘prenup’ or ‘OKCupid.’
Together Forever
Consultancy Together have created this simple device to flatter, terrify or tickle (figuratively) your loved one – this cute Together Forever temporary tattoo. The sweet little inking celebrates both Valentine’s Day and Together’s tenth birthday this year.
