Travelling chairs

London-based artists Clarke & Reilly have lovingly restored a set of eight vintage chairs, only to expose them to the cold of a Peckham rooftop and the extreme heat of the Californian desert and photograph the results.

The 8 Chairs project saw Clarke & Reilly (real names David Grocott and Bridget Dwyer) first source and restore eight historic pieces of furniture.

The chairs were then installed on a rooftop in Peckham, to weather the icy winter, before being packed up and shipped off to the baking California desert, before eventually making their way back to London to be displayed at Gallery Libby Sellers.

Clarke & Reilly describe their style as ‘unashamedly romantic and tirelessly imaginative,’ and have also used the project to explore the effect that the extreme temperatures have on the furniture.

As well as the restored (and presumably slightly tarnished) items of furniture, also going on show will be films and photography documenting the process.

8 Chairs, by Clarke & Reilly, is at Gallery Libby Sellers, 41-42 Berners Street, London W1T, from 14 March-27 April.
