Garcia documents the lives of designers, photographers, artists and filmmakers including Peter Blake, Stuart Semple, Gary Card and Fred Butler, creating black and white and colour portraits that depict the little details and nuances that help shape their creative processes.
‘The photographs in this book don’t try to dissect creativity or explain the process of inspiration; they make no thunderbolt claims about genius’, says the book’s introduction.
‘They are simply the result of time spent with 60 of Britain’s most creative people…all linked not by the arena in which they operate, but by the fact that ideas are their currency. Whether artist or curator, fashion designer or florist, their aim is to cross a few boundaries, shake things up a touch, make something new.’
To create the images, Garcia spent one day with each person featured, taking her camera around their homes and studios to get a feel of their lives.
As such, the images have a quietly insightful quality, offering snippets of revelation through objects, movements and scenes, showing lives, rather than artwork or finished pieces.
‘There are other books for that’, the introduction explains. ‘Cat’s book is about the life, not the work. Above all else, it is a series of photo stories about people… the collected fragments of lives lived creatively, one day at a time.’
The book is edited by Anthony Leyton and curated by Olivia Triggs, director of illustration agency Breed.
