The best photos of the year

The shortlist has been unveiled for the Sony World Photograph Awards, which showcases the best images from the past 12 months.

The awards are split into professional, open and youth schemes, with categories including current affairs, sport and still life.

Nearly 140 000 images were submitted to the competition, from 166 countries – from this the shortlist was drawn up.

The eclectic shortlist ranges from Guy Martin’s image of Turkish protesters in Gezi Square to Kai-Uwe Gundlach’s still life of a cigarette and coffee cup and Sophie Gamand’s shot of a dog mid-bath.

The category winners and Photographer of the Year title will be announced on 30 April, and all the shortlisted images are going on show at London’s Somerset House from 1-18 May.
