Selfridges, Boots, Argos and The Warehouse Group are among the British shortlisted entries in the World Retail Awards 2008.

The London branch of fashion shop Fornarina, created by Californian designer Giorgio Borruso, is competing against John Lewis Foodhall to win the title of innovative store format of the year.

Also shortlisted for the innovation award are Fresh & Easy Neighbourhood Market in the US, children’s store Baroue in Kuwait, designed by Gensler, homeware store Normann in Copenhagen and Dubai beauty store Va Va Voom, created by Zebra Design.

Selfridges is competing against five European and Russian department stores and shopping centres to win the retail destination of the year award. These are Evropeyskiy in Moscow, Kanyon in Istanbul, Manufaktura in Lódz, Zlote Tarasy in Warsaw and Illum in Copenhagen.

The marketing campaign of the year award shortlist includes Boots ‘Get Beach Gorgeous Seven Step Plan’. Argos, Littlewoods Shop Direct and Tesco Group are nominees in the e-tailer of the year category.

British retail groups dominate the shortlist for the responsible retailer of the year. Sainsbury’s, Tesco, The Warehouse Group and Woolworths are battling C&A Europe and France’s Carrefour Group to win the accolade.

The shortlists for the remaining two categories – multi-market retailer of the year and retailer of the year, will be released in February.

The winning retailers will be announced at the World Retail Congress in Barcelona this April.
