Architect Jan Kaplicky dies

Czech-born architect Jan Kaplicky has died at the age of 71.

Kaplicky founded the Future Systems practice in 1979, having worked with architects Norman Foster, Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano.

Future Systems designed the Lord’s Cricket Ground media centre in London, which won the 1999 Stirling Prize, and the Selfridges building in Birmingham.

Kaplicky’s blob-like design for the Prague National Library caused controversy in his native country.

Czech news agency CTK says Kaplicky died in Prague just hours after his second wife Eliska gave birth to a daughter. Kaplicky also had a son from his first marriage, to former Future Systems partner Amanda Levete.

This is tragic news, and I am sure he will be missed very much by all those who either knew him personally or through his projects. Jan was a truly inspirational architect to work for, and I feel privileged for having had that honour.
