Kensington Palace hosts ‘multi-sensory exhibition’

Kensington Palace is set to host a ‘multi-sensory exhibition’ which will ‘open up’ the world of the royal court with installations, soundscapes, interactive theatre, film and fashion.

The exhibition at the west London attraction, which is set to run from 26 March to June 2012, promises to ‘reveal tales of love and hate, surprise and sadness, secrets and jealousy’.

Illustrator and set designer Echo Morgan will create a commissioned piece which he describes as a ‘cabinet of curiosities’, inspired by Queen Mary III and Caroline of Ansbach (1683-1737). She will also design a ‘dress of the world’, sculpted in paper and decorated with prints of maps.

Fashion designers Vivienne Westwood, William Tempest, Stephen Jones, Boudicca and Aminka Wilmont will create further installations inspired by the palace’s former princesses.

Boudicca’s installation, displayed in the palace state room, The Cupola Room, will take its brief from a clock centrepiece and a music box that once played commissioned melodies by Handel. ‘Dresses the colour of time’ will be displayed, and a soundscape of ticking and chiming will be heard.

All designs will appear as part of theatre company Wildwork’s artistic direction of The Enchanted Palace, which runs alongside a £12m investment by charity Historic Royal Palaces.
