Blackpool to get redesigned trams

Blackpool Council has revealed designs for the town’s new trams, which will begin service at Easter 2012.

The Flexity 2 model tram, which has been designed and built by German company Bombardier Transportation, was unveiled this morning by Peter Callow, leader of Blackpool Council, at an exhibition at the town’s Solaris Centre.

Callow says, ‘The anticipation for the arrival of the new trams is growing and this exhibition will give people a sneak preview of what to expect.

‘These innovations will not only bring Blackpool present-day benefits for residents and tourists, but also secure a great future for the town, bringing higher efficiency and modernisation.’

The trams feature 100 per cent low floor design for easy access, maximised aisle width throughout, and an improved heating and ventilation system.

A new tram depot at Blackpool’s Starr Gate will be built to house the trams, as part of a £20m improvement project for the town’s transport system.
