Illusion and reality

For their first UK show, photography duo Wyse + Gabriely are uniting London and Haifa, Israel, and the ideas of illusion and reality.

The show is being facilitated by arts label No Way, and will showcase how Haifa-based Wyse and Gabriely work together to create images that present two distinct, yet united artistic voices.

Photographs, installations and video-performance work will be on display, many of which show Wyse + Gabriely’s exploration of ideas of ‘modern icons’.

Other themes to their work include ‘the fake and fraudulent nature of our world as it is refracted through the illusory vision of the camera lens’, according to No Way.

Wyse’s images are created using analogue technologies, collaging a series of images in a darkroom to create the final works. She chooses the subjects for these images largely through chance encounters, often finding faces that intrigue her on the bus or street.

By contrast, Gabriely utilises the language of fashion and advertising to form her works, placing herself in the images and ‘using her body as a site for experimentation’, No Way explains.

Wyse + Gabriely runs from 30 January – 14 February at Neu Gallery, 30a Redchurch Street, London E2. The show is supported by the Embassy of Israel, UK
