The credit union movement in Manchester is undergoing a rebrand with the help of Funnel Creative.

The graphic design group has been working with Manchester Credit Union on its ‘three-year plan’ that aims to change public perception about credit unions and grow its membership base.

Manchester Credit Union, previously known as East Manchester Credit Union, now serves a wider catchment area, having absorbed smaller credit unions in Beswick and Wythenshawe.

Managing director of Funnel Creative Bill Green explains the motivation behind the plans.

‘The credit union movement has been really successful in Leeds, Glasgow and the Republic of Ireland. There are plans to copy this success and grow it in Manchester, taking on more payrolls, growing membership and extending services,’ he says.

‘It needed a professional image to be able to compete with the high street,’ he adds.

Manchester Credit Union handed the business to Funnel Creative, without a pitch, after it approached the credit union introducing itself and its work.

Funnel Creative chose a hand-illustrated logo based on the bee, a symbol with a rich heritage used for more than 150 years to signify the workers of the industrial revolution.

‘The bee is used throughout Manchester, from buildings to company logos, but the fact that it is hand-illustrated gives it exclusive ownership,’ says Green.

The logo is expected to roll out across on- and off-line platforms over the coming months.
