Halo Media has created a seasonal brand identity for the county of Somerset, which was inspired by music chosen to mirror the Somerset countryside.

Somerset is split into six different areas, each with its own character and landscape. In order to capture the diversity of the region, with its hills, moors, coastline and wildlife, The Bristol-based design consultancy created a soundtrack to conjure up a state of mind conducive to producing the creative work.

Starting with Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the playlist grew to incorporate music which the design team felt ‘mirrored the soul of the county’, such as Ry Cooder, Cat Stevens and Groove Armada.

‘We don’t just design our work, we compose it,’ says Halo creative director Nick Ellis.

Ellis explains that the large gaps of stillness in Vivaldi’s four seasons reflected the calm expanse of the Somerset Levels, while hinting at the background rumble of rural life.

Taking the idea of the four seasonal movements in the Vivaldi piece, the group decided to create four versions of the identity, one for each season, Ellis adds. Pictured here is summer.
