South Bank to host Skystation seat
A public seating concept by Peter Newman that allows users to lie back and gaze at the sky will be installed at London’s South Bank next week.
The Skystation is being installed as part of an exhibition of the artist’s works at the Hayward Gallery, SE1.
Inspired by Le Corbusier’s LC4 chaise longue, the circular outdoor seat features contours intended to fit the reclining human form.
Newman hopes the Skystation will ‘offer a rare opportunity in a city, to stop for a minute, lie back and enjoy the sense of space above’. He also believes that the seat will ‘make conversation between strangers almost inevitable’.
The seat is inscribed with the dedication ‘In Loving Memory Of Those Yet To Be Born’.
The Skystation is also the first product to be launched on Future Editions, an online gallery of public art limited editions developed with artists and designers, founded by cultural consultancy Futurecity.
The prototype of the seat goes on show outside the Hayward Gallery from 8 July to 14 September, before moving to 100% Design at Earls Court, SW5 from 18-21 September.
