Busaba Eathai and Smack named best-designed restaurant and bar

The winners of the 2011 Restaurant and Bar Design Awards have been announced, with David Archer Architects’ Busaba Eathai branch in Bicester named best restaurant and Smack, in Leamington Spa, designed by Steve Smith, scooping the best bar prize.

The winners were whittled down from a shortlist of more than 300 entries from 50 countries.

Busaba Eathai also won the award for multiple resturant, while Smack picked up the award for independent bar or club.

SHH won the awards for independent restaurant for its work on the Barbican Lounge in London, as well as the award for restaurant, bar or club in another space for its work on the Barbican Foodhall.

Surface ID took the award for multiple bar or club for its work on the Grosvenor Café in Glasgow and the award for best pub for Stravaigin in Glasgow, while Fox Linton won in the restaurant or bar in a hotel category for its work for the Bar in Coworth Park in Ascot.

Stiff and Trevillion took the award in the café or fast food sector for its work for Costa Coffee in London, while Here Design picked up the identity and website design award for its work for The Dock in London. Andy Martin Studio took the award for best lighting scheme for Chan in Greece.

The best international restaurant award went to the Look Out Café in Japan, by Design Spirits and Cave in Australia by Koichi Takada, while best international bar was won by Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio for the Tazmania Ballroom in Hong Kong.
