Child’s Play

The lovely people of The Design Conspiracy are collaborating with Earlham Primary School in East London to further their mission to teach children photography.

This philanthropic bunch are organising the 20×12 project, which will see children from the school – based in the Olympic borough of Newham – learning the photographic ropes, using sport and the Olympic games with which they will share their neighbourhoods as inspiration.

Kingsley Gratrick, founding partner of The Design Conspiracy, says, ‘The school’s within a stone’s throw of the Olympic Stadium in Newham, but we didn’t feel there was a lot going on  community-wise between the Olympics and the people within the borough.’

Children from year four took part in a competition in which they had to describe and photograph what the Olympics meant to them. Teachers then selected 12 children to take part, who will learn the art of photography, such as lighting and aperture, in after-school classes over the next academic year. It is hoped that elements of photography will also be incorporated into curriculum subjects, such as art and maths.

Gratrick adds, ‘The ultimate thing to come out of it would be to hear one of the kids sat in future “my inspiration would be those guys who came to teach us photography.”’

To raise awareness of the project, The Design Conspiracy is hosting an exhibition and launch party of photographs of the children involved in the project, and their Olympic-inspired snaps.

They’re on the lookout for people who want to get involved – from inspirational sportsmen and women, to photographers prepared to help mentor the sessions, to galleries and sponsors, so head down to find out how you can help.
