Stiff & Trevillion and The Plant work on Jamie’s restaurant in Cheltenham

Architect Stiff & Trevillion and The Plant design consultancy have created the interiors for the new Jamie’s Italian restaurant in Cheltenham’s Grade II-listed former high court building.

As brand guardian for chef Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Italian chain, The Plant has worked with Stiff & Trevillion on a number of outlets over the past four years.

For the Cheltenham site, Stiff & Trevillion is responsible for interior design while The Plant is designing the exterior shop front, signage and internal graphics.

Stiff & Trevillion director Mike Stiff says, ‘It’s in the Cheltenham high court building, so it’s not the best building for restaurants. We had to retain the existing features so there’s the dock and the judge’s table – you can sit in a row in the witness box.’

The restaurant features a red and blue colour palette, a trompe l‘oeil image created by The Plant and timber and stone flooring. A large antipasti bar is situated in the main courtroom area.

Stiff says the consultancy used colours and materials rather than the architectural interventions usually used in Jamie’s Italian branches. He explains, ‘The light fittings have been designed specially – some are based on the scales of justice.’

The branch will open to the public this weekend.
