Things We Like

Our weekly round-up of things we like here on the DW news-desk.

Ping Pong at Vintage Festival

Table-tennis, ping-pong, or wiff-waff – call it what you will,  we like it.  And so does Vintage festival apparently.

Exhibition Match will see five full-size table tennis tables donated by Dunlop and customised by designers and artists Cristina Guitian, Kelly Hoppen, William Hardie, Will Nash and Vintage founder Wayne Hemingway.

In their brief the designers were told shape and structure can change but the table must be playable.

The Exhibition Match Open Tournament at Vintage will take place outside the Hayward Gallery at Southbank  Centre from 29-31 July, plus ‘special guests and past and future stars of UK table tennis’ are promised.

The sport is only dwarfed by chess-boxing in it’s pursuit of  physical and mental dexterity.  If you’re a fan, also try and find the permanent outdoor table tennis tables in Dulwich Park, designed in steel and concrete.

Vintage festival itself looks set to be a cultural promise land for music, fashion, film, art and design, traced through every decade form the 1920s – 1980s, in the context of the Festival of Britain (1951) which celebrates its 60th anniversary on the Southbank this summer.

Lord Frederic Leighton's Pavonia
Lord Frederic Leighton’s Pavonia

If you haven’t yet had a chance to visit the stunning Cult of Beauty: The Aesthetic Movement 1860-1900 Exhibition at the V&A, this weekend is your last chance to see this stunning show.

Incorporating furnishings, sculpture, paintings and jewelry, The Cult of Beauty explores the rather wonderful notion of ’art for art’s sake’, including iconic images and artefacts from Burne-Jones, Whistler, Leighton, Rossetti, William Morris, Aubrey Beardsley and of course, possibly the most famous aesthete, Oscar Wilde.

Boat Magazine

A brilliant concept and equally brilliant execution make Boat Magazine one of the most exciting new titles we’ve seen in a while. For the first issue Boat Studio – the consultancy behind Boat Magazine – upped sticks to Bosnian capital Sarajevo for a month to immerse themselves in the city and tease out its untold stories.

The resulting first issue of Boat Magazine boasts interviews with local characters including chefs, war photographers and musicians and photo essays that focus on independent traders and sport in the city. Next stop for the roving Boat Magazine team is US city Detroit, which will be the subject of issue number two.
