D&AD New Blood 2013

D&AD’s New Blood show has returned to London’s Spitalfields market to showcase the best graduate work from 2013.

The bombardment on the senses of graduate shows can be rather overwhelming but there’s a logic and order to the 98 snaking booths delineated along the lines of course type and university.

It’s come to be known as a head-hunting feast and there seemed to be plenty of industry creatives talent spotting yesterday.

Here are a few pieces that caught my eye. Nothing of course beats seeing it in person, but if you can’t make it have a leaf through here. http://www.dandad.org/talent

Michael Harper, BA graphic design, Middlesex University has given a physicality to his graphic talent with BeatCity – a build-your-own construction kit, which literally houses different types of music.

For example plug a device into a house for your house playlist, a garage for garage music, and worryingly an elevator for elevator music.

Although evocating genres that don’t relate to building types might be a bit trickier, this is about both the idea and the execution.

Sam Curtis, BA illustration and visual communication, University has been working on an imagined brief for Douwe Egberts. His composite approach and broad skill set coupled with an interest in ‘neat, clean ordered imagery’ have produced some great results – often bringing together graphics, typography and photography, like here.

Ryan Coupe, BA interactive media design, Northumbria University has created Memico, a product built around the idea that, ‘Every song has a memory and every memory has a song.’

Saddened by the thought that nobody shares printed photographs in person anymore, Coupe has used RFID technology to give photographs back their physicality in the digital age and by giving them sound.

You pop a card into the Memico device and bring images with sound up on-screen.

George Heaven, BA illustration, Kingston University created an arresting series of illustrations called Slow Roasted Comics.

What started as ‘a general interest in beauty treatments and women’s beauty regimes’ was given a ‘pulpy’ comic book twist. ‘The project is intended to be a fun take on something rather mysterious to the male community.’

Marco Bevilacqua, BA visual communication, Gray’s School of Art, crammed his portfolio into this little newspaper – held here slightly skewwhiff. He seems to combine the savant ability of the best illustrators sardonic wit.
