Peter Saville pushes the logo to breaking point
Peter Saville has created a limited edition range of polo shirts for Lacoste, which feature the designer’s experiments with the brand’s crocodile logo.
Saville was commissioned by Lacoste to design a range for the brand’s 80th birthday and responded by taking on the crocodile – scribbling over it, redrawing it, or reducing it to a squiggly line.
Throughout the range, the shirts are recognisable only by a flash of green on the chest against a white background.
Saville says the range is an ‘experiment with brand culture’, adding, ‘Right up until the very end I though someone would put their foot down and say, “No way, we cannot do this to the logo”.’
The Lacoste Holiday Collector No8 range is available with a choice of eight bespoke logos, while Saville has also created another limited-edition of 160 shirts, each with a different logo.
Lacoste has previously worked with designers including Tom Dixon and the Campana Brothers on its holiday ranges.
“also-created”
Why on earth is this hyphenated?
I was expecting something interesting. There aren’t experiments, they are iterations.
You just have to wonder how many options didn’t make this final ‘selection’…?
