According to its creators Rute Nieto Ferreira and Amandine Alessandra, the eagle-eyed little duo – who were just beginning to recognise letters of the alphabet – spotted ‘M’s within the roofs of an industrial building as they strolled down the Regent’s Canal.
Thus began the search for letters around the area, and The Big Letter Hunt was born.
The book takes the form of a Riso-printed alphabet picture book, showing beautiful images of buildings and the letters hidden within them from around east London.
Areas covered include Barbican, the City, Spitalfields, Haggerston, Hackney Road, Globe Town, Bow, Mile End and Whitechapel.
Keen architecture fans and east London-aficionados might spot buildings including Dennis Lasdun’s Keeling House (the now-iconic council house development) and the much-Instagrammed Gasworks on the Regent’s canal, as well as local primary schools, blocks of flats and a library.
The Big Letter Hunt is the first release from publisher Tower Block Books, formed by graphic designer Alessandra and architect and lecturer Ferreira.
The Big Letter Hunt in the East End of London is out now published by Tower Block Books, priced £14. For more information or to order visit http://towerblockbooks.com/
