Design events lined up for City of London Festival

This year’s City of London Festival, which starts today, is to have a significant design agenda.

Away, an exhibition curated by Redesign – a social enterprise that encourages sustainable activity through design – will see live design demonstrations take place in the City.

Wemake has been commissioned by Redesign and will bring its Tetris concept to the festival, inviting the public to cut out a chair shape from a cardboard box, which will form a cross-section of a cardboard bench when stuck to the next shape.

Eco-design group Reestore will display designs including a chaise longue that used to be a bath.

‘There is no such place as “away”,’ says Redesign curator Jason Allcorn. ‘If things aren’t designed properly, they get to the end of their life quicker. We want to make people think about what happens by showcasing things designers are doing and showing people what they can do with their own stuff.’

All the ‘away’ activities will be housed in shipping containers in New Street Square on 14-15 July, and on 16-17 July at London Wall, Moorgate.

Today, 30 decorated and redesigned pianos will begin to appear around the City and Greater London.

The Street Pianos event, organised by charity Sing London, will see 15 of the salvaged instruments destined for the City and the other 15 handed to designers and artists, who were briefed to dress their piano to reflect the area of Greater London each has been placed in.

Creative Orchestra has designed the Soho piano. Chris Arnold, creative partner at Creative Orchestra, says, ‘We’ve done ours up in Anne Summers-type material and butchered another one as part of the design process.’ All pianos will be donated to community causes after 23 June.

The City of London Festival will run until August.
