Rawls named One New Change retail guardian

Rawls has been appointed by Land Securities to oversee interior design at the One New Change shopping development in the City of London.

As retail guardian, the interior management specialist will create best-practice guidelines for store design and streetscapes.

Rawls has produced a design guide, and will brief design consultancies and tenants directly as proposals are made for each shop.

Adam Rawls, of Rawls, says the most important consideration is how lighting might affect the protected sightline to neighbouring St Paul’s Cathedral.

‘We need to think about how it looks at night – how it is lit,’ says Rawls. ‘There are a series of streetscape facades, offices, retail and restaurant spaces. We have to make sure the lighting is co-ordinated and not too imposing,’ he adds.

Rawls will be looking at ‘attention to detail’ inside the stores and wants to ensure ‘quality materials are being used, cash desks don’t back on to windows’ and designs allow for merchandise ‘to be graduated, with smaller things at the front of the store’.

The seven-storey One New Change development, designed by architect Jean Nouvel, is due to open in October 2010 and will occupy 1ha.
