Westfield shortlists designers for Stratford store commission

Designer Tom Dixon, artist Tracey Emin and retail expert Mary Portas have shortlisted emerging designers who will compete to produce a commissioned work for the opening of Westfield Stratford City in 2012.

The shortlist is the next stage in Westfield’s Studio East initiative, which aims to ‘identify and support’ designers, artists and innovators.

Product designers, artists, environment designers and fashion designers have been selected by a judging panel which also includes fashion experts Roland Mouret and Erin O’Connor.

Dixon has selected four product designers, who will now compete with entrants from other categories to win the commission. Industrial designer Benjamin Hubert, sculptor-turned-furniture designer Peter Marigold, interior and product designer Lee Broom and 3D constructed textile  designer Donna Wilson have all been selected. A brief has not yet been set.

The £1.45bn Westfield Stratford City project will be the largest shopping centre in Europe when it opens prior to the 2012 Olympic Games.
