Daniel Buren to create Tottenham Court Road installation

Art on The Underground has announced that French artist Daniel Buren will create a permanent installation as part of the redevelopment plans at Tottenham Court Road Tube station.

Buren was ‘one of several artists to submit a proposal’, according to Transport for London, which says Art on The Underground worked with TFL, London Underground, local authorities and Hawkins Brown – the architect for the project.

The design will consist of large-scale diamond and circle shapes fixed to glass walls in the Oxford Street entrance and ticket hall.

Buren will work in striped vinyl – his preferred material – which will help bring light into the public areas.

The work will be installed for the full reopening of the station in 2016, when at least 200,000 people per day are expected to use it.

A cabinet showing the forms Buren is using will be displayed in the new ticket hall.

Buren’s piece follows a mosaic design by Eduardo Paolozzi that cover parts of the station walls at Tottenham Court Road. sThese will largely be preserved, with some sections removed and redisplayed elsewhere in the station.
