Totem tour
The next step on the Inkygoodness Character Totem tour stops at Manchester where the group will be teaming up with The Publishers Club to make a collaborative ‘zine, featuring specially commissioned works from some of their favourite illustrators. Design Week caught up with Ammo magazine creative director Dave Hughes to talk about the publication and get a sneak preview of the illustrations it will include.
Design Week: What is the ‘zine about?
Dave Hughes: The ‘zine’s theme is loosely based on totems to tie in with the Inkygoodness Character Totem tour. The Publishers Club and Inkygoodness are teaming up for this event and we wanted to do something that would support the exciting work Inkygoodness are doing to promote illustration.
DW: Who is involved?
Hughes: The Publishers Club is made up of a group of people with a shared passion for creative publishing. The group includes Julian James from New Sugar Magazine, Bec Brown from Blanket Magazine, Ammo Magazine and our latest member Gordon Reid, aka Middle Boop. For our Manchester event we’re teaming up with Inkygoodness who are fast becoming one of the UK’s most important supporters of illustration. Ripe Digital, printers of Ammo Magazine, have kindly offered to support our event by printing and binding our first ‘zines. We’ve also got One 69 A, a Manchester-based screen printers, who are going to be screen printing the covers of the ‘zines live. The event will be taking place in Manchester’s Cord Bar and time lapse photography of the event is being filmed by Robert Watson Studio.
DW: How did you select the people feature in the ‘zine?
Hughes: Individually we created a shortlist of our favourite submitted artworks and luckily those lists were also identical. There were several artworks which really stood out and we couldn’t have imagined the ‘zine without them in it.
DW: Is there a consistent style throughout?
Hughes: The theme was totems and although all the included artworks used totems as a starting point the outcome was really varied. The artists were limited to a black and white colour palette which has resulted in some outstanding artwork. It’s so interesting to see the different directions artists have taken from the same starting point.
DW: How have you created the cover?
Hughes: The ‘zine’s cover artwork was created by 4 supremely talented artists – Lesley Barnes, Daren Newman, Stephen Chan & Simon Wild. We gave the artists the Totem theme to work with and they developed their own ideas into a selection of fantastic artworks.
DW: Why print the cover live on the night?
Hughes: One of the reasons for forming the Publishers Club was our shared love for creative publishing and especially printed output. Although lots of people may have purchased screen printed artwork they may not have tried it for themselves or really understand the process involved. Screen printing the covers live will hopefully create an interesting and fun way of showcasing the craftsmanship and skill that traditional printing methods involve. We’d like to continue to combine modern digital printing methods with traditional hands-on techniques as this melding of old and new creates such an great final output.
